Lena Haug and 'All the Wild Horses'

Presented by: Pend Oreille Art's Council

Celebrating local equestrian Lena Haug, who is currently participating in the Mongol Derby, the longest endurance horse race in the world. Tickets are now on sale for an event that will feature an equine-themed visual arts reception, a screening of the critically acclaimed, award-winning film “All the Wild Horses,” and a conversation with Haug about her experience racing across the Mongolian dessert this summer.

For Lena Haug the Mongol Derby is the culmination of her passion for outdoor adventure and horsemanship, racing across the steppes where Genghis Khan and his expert horse warriors once rode. In 2021 Haug was selected from thousands of riders from around the world as one of 46 riders to compete in the event, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID pandemic. Haug’s eligibility was reestablished for the 2022 event, and after arriving in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia last week for three days of training, the riders started the 1,000 kilometer (approximately 620 miles) course that mirrors Genghis Khan’s horse messenger system during the 13th century.  The riders have 10 days to finish the race, with 28 checkpoints along the way and a fresh mount approximately every 25 miles.  Beyond the physical demands of the journey, participants must also possess considerable mental strength to successfully complete the event.
